There have been many recent discussions and debates over nutrition for our pets, who many of us feel are members of the family. We want to make the best decision on what food to feed and it can be very confusing to know where to start. Recently, grain free diets have been the topic of an ongoing discussion.
The FDA is currently studying pet foods to see if there is a correlation with diets which are high in legumes (generally the grain-free foods) and dilated cardiomyopathy (heart disease) in dogs. We are seeing this type of heart disease in breeds who historically have not been affected by it. The thought is that some diets may be deficient in an amino acid called Taurine.
