Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)

Acupuncture needles with attached electrodes are placed at the beginning and end of a muscle to stimulate a muscle contraction via a low-level current. The contractions that are stimulated help strengthen muscles that lack nerve impulses. NMES can also be used in the post-operative recovery period to prevent atrophy when a patient is non-weight bearing.

Transcutaneous Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation (TENS)

TENS therapy stimulates muscle contraction via cutaneous electrodes. TENS can be utilized when NMES therapy is contra-indicated such as due to dermatitis.
